Jeans
Jeans are one of the most popular kinds of trousers made from denim. Denim is a rugged cotton twill textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp fibers. Denim garments are in use since more than 2 centuries ago. Originally made in Nimes, France and called as Serge de Nimes. Then it was shortened as denim. It was traditionally colored in blue with indigo dye to make blue jeans.
The earliest known precursor to jeans is the Indian export of thick cotton cloth in 16th century, it is known as dungaree. This garment is dyed in indigo and sold near Mumbai, which is cut by sailors to suit their needs.
Jeans were mainly designed for workers but as the time passes by it became very popular among teenagers in late 1950s. The historic brands of jeans include Levi's and Wrangler. Nowadays jeans became the most preferred form of casual dress around the globe. As the days roll off the various shades of blue jeans are first created, then slowly jeans are made available in various colors with different shades. Then with changing trend and revolution in textile field, the jeans are further modified and some stitches, tearing and some designs are applied to it creating a new generation of jeans.
Knitwear
Knitted fabric is the major class of fabric next to woven and non woven category of fabrics. Compared to the other two classes, the knit fabrics are much more elastic, so they were initially used in stockings and other clothing where elasticity is required. The knit fabrics can be stretched to a maximum of up to 500% depending on the material used and the knitting pattern. The two patterns often used in knitted fabrics are Lace knitting and Cable knitting. Lace Knitting is generally more flexible fabric because of the large holes which can deform in shape, whereas Cable Knitting is not as flexible as Lace Knitting since the stitches are crossed under tension, this restricts its elastic property.
Now these Knitted fabrics are used to create stylish outfits which are equally good, as the woven and non woven fabrics. These fabrics are generally warmer and more comfortable than woven fabrics, so they are suitable to make good garments. They are usually preferred in cold weather condition because they get closer to the body and keep you warm. Knitted fabrics are often made from wool which stays warm even when it is wet.
The elasticity and warmth are two opposing characteristics in knitted fabrics. So, if you need more elasticity then you have to choose the fabrics that are designed with large holes, which give less warmth and if you want more warmth then you have to select the other option. The size is not a big criterion in knitwear because it is basically an elastic material, hence you can feel it more comfortable than woven fabrics which are rigid and doesn't expand or shrink to even a small extent.
Polos
Polos are formerly known as tennis shirt and is also called as golf shirt. It is usually made using knitted cloth because Polos are actually designed for sports person. So, while playing the garments shouldn't disturb the player. Since the knitted fabrics are elastic in nature the player feels comfortable to move and stretch the arms. Sometimes pique cotton, merino wool, silk, or synthetic fibers are also used.
Until early 20th century, tennis players wore ordinary tennis whites which consist of a long sleeve shirt, flannel trousers and ties. This attire was uncomfortable for the tennis players. Rene Lacoste, the tennis champion to solve this problem designed a white, short sleeved shirt using knit pique cotton. This shirt had a longer shirt tail in back than in the front so as to keep the shirt tucked into the back of tennis shorts when the player is bent over to survey the court. He first used this shirt at 1926 U.S. Open championship. Since then it became popular as tennis shirt and used as attire by tennis players.
In 1933, after retiring from tennis, Lacoste started mass marketing his tennis shirt. Until that Polo players wore thick long sleeve shirts which were invented in late 19th century. This is the first shirt to have a buttoned-down collar, to keep the collars from flapping in wind. This shirt was felt little inconvenient because of the thick material used and the long sleeves. When they came to know about Lacoste's invention they adopted it. Soon this shirt became very popular as Polo shirt.
In the second half of 20th century, clothing used in golf became more casual, and the tennis shirt is adopted as universal golf attire. The only difference between the Golf shirt and the Polo shirt is that, the collar is fabricated using a stitched double layer of same fabric, usually only ply ribbed knit cotton is used for this purpose.
Today almost all major outfit manufacturers make some variation of Lacoste's tennis shirt as a casual wear for both men and women.
Trainers
Trainers are generally referred to as athletic shoes which is the name given to the footwear designed specifically for sporting and other physical activities. They usually differ slightly from the ordinary footwear in style and color combination used. But today many manufacturers have started using the style and looks of trainers to casual footwear by observing the attraction of normal people over these trainers. Trainers are evolved over centuries from rubber soled plimsolls to air cushioned, gel filled capsules according to the needs, looks and the sporting performance.
Initially rubber soled plimsolls are widely used by most of the sports men. This bottom of this footwear is designed such that it gives maximum grip to the player and he don't gets slip down during the game by grooving lines and different anti – slip patterns. It is developed using the process called vulcanization, which uses heat to meld rubber and cloth together. These shoes are not only light weight and comfortable, but it also allows you to move around without making noise. Hence it is also known as sneakers. It was commercially produced by Keds Shoe Company and went on commercial sales in the year 1917. Since then this type of shoes is used mostly, for playing basket ball, Volley ball, tennis and much more.
Even before Keds started manufacturing the rubber shoes on commercial scale, a British company named J.W. Foster and Sons, now known as Reebok have developed spiked trainers in late 1890s. They designed the shoe such that it will give more grip to the sportsmen and also increase his speed. Later in 1925 ADIDASS modified this spiked trainer and developed a range of shoes with hand forged spikes which are lighter but more effective than the previous version. These types of trainers are mainly used for cricket, football and much more.
