Until early 20th century, tennis players wore ordinary "tennis whites" which consist of a long sleeve shirt, flannel trousers and ties. This attire was uncomfortable for the tennis players. Rene Lacoste, the tennis champion to solve this problem designed a white, short sleeved shirt using knit pique cotton. This shirt had a longer shirt tail in back than in the front so as to keep the shirt tucked into the back of tennis shorts when the player is bent over to survey the court. He first used this shirt at 1926 U.S. Open championship. Since then it became popular as tennis shirt and used as attire by tennis players.
In 1933, after retiring from tennis, Lacoste started mass marketing his tennis shirt. Until that Polo players wore thick long sleeve shirts which were invented in late 19th century. This is the first shirt to have a buttoned-down collar, to keep the collars from flapping in wind. This shirt was felt little inconvenient because of the thick material used and the long sleeves. When they came to know about Lacoste's invention they adopted it. Soon this shirt became very popular as Polo shirt.
In the second half of 20th century, clothing used in golf became more casual, and the tennis shirt is adopted as universal golf attire. The only difference between the Golf shirt and the Polo shirt is that, the collar is fabricated using a stitched double layer of same fabric, usually only ply ribbed knit cotton is used for this purpose.
Today almost all major outfit manufacturers make some variation of Lacoste's tennis shirt as a casual wear for both men and women. In our Polos category you can find all these variations and different version of Polos, to be worn as sports attire or as a casual wear. You may not find this much variety of Polos anywhere on the net except on Shirts Clothing.
